TV licence fees are not very popular. Above all, the amount to be regularly paid faces criticism. Without the obligation to pay fees, around one third of the young Austrians and Germans surveyed in summer 2016 would no longer financially support public service media.
In the section below, several charts explain the views on licence fees among the survey participants in more detail. The data are based on quantitative research which was conducted in June and July 2016 and focused on expenses and willingness to pay for media in Austria and Germany. Roughly 1,650 participants from both countries took part in the survey.
